This was stated on April 5 at a regular briefing by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, explaining the purpose of Washington's new sanctions.

The goal is to force them to make a choice, she said, answering a question about whether the goal of the United States at this stage is to achieve a default in Russia.

Russia does not have unlimited resources, especially now, given the crippling sanctions that we have put into effect. And they will have to choose between exhausting the remaining valuable dollar reserves or declaring default, Psaki believes.

Earlier, Psaki said that the US authorities will announce new sanctions against Russia on April 6. The restrictions will affect Russian financial organizations, state-owned enterprises and officials.

The White House press secretary was also asked whether the American authorities have any assessment of when such a default could be expected.
